A recent study suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) is almost twice as effective as traditional scanning methods in assessing the aggressiveness of rare forms of cancer. This technology is able to identify details invisible to the naked eye, achieving an accuracy of 82%, compared to only 44% in the case of laboratory analysis.
Researchers at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research UK say AI could represent a significant improvement in treatment and benefit thousands of patients every year. There is also optimism about AI’s potential to detect other cancers at early stages.
AI is already showing promise in diagnosing breast cancer and reducing the length of treatment. Intelligent algorithms are able to process large amounts of data and identify patterns in it, making predictions, solving problems, and learning from their own mistakes.
Professor Christina Messiou, consultant radiologist at The Royal Marsden and NHS Foundation Trust and professor of imaging and personalized oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, is excited about the potential of this cutting-edge technology. According to him, AI could significantly improve patient outcomes through faster diagnosis and personalized treatment.
In their study, the researchers used a technique called radiomics to identify signs invisible to the naked eye in the scans of 170 patients with retroperitoneal sarcoma. With the help of the collected data, the artificial intelligence algorithm was able to classify the degree of aggressiveness of the tumors of another 89 patients with a much higher accuracy than that of biopsies, which analyze only a small part of the cancerous tissue under a microscope.
The ultimate goal is to use AI technology on a large scale to provide personalized treatment plans for high-risk patients, while those at low risk can be spared unnecessary treatments and follow-up scans. This innovation has the potential to transform the lives of people diagnosed with sarcoma by providing treatments tailored to the specificity of their cancer biology.
