Self-driving drone killed a man for the first time. This happened in Libya in March 2020, but it became known about the incident only now from the report of the UN Security Council. It is noted that this is the first time in history when a robot attacked a person without an operator’s command.
The drone was manufactured in Turkey. The drone has been equipped with the ability to “highly efficient autonomous mode”: it can attack targets without the need for a command from the pilot.
“This is a lethal autonomous weapon system, programmed to attack targets without communication with the operator,” says the UN report.
The deceased was a member of the Libyan National Army, which is fighting against the army of the country’s government.
