Artist Alicia Framis from the Netherlands married an AI hologram. Ailex, an avatar, is the combination of Alicia’s three ex-boyfriends.11/11/2024 | 1:59 minutes
It is the climax of a unique art event: to dramatic music, the Dutch-Catalan artist Alicia Framis swears eternal loyalty to the hologram Ailex in a festive ceremony. Beforehand, the bride effectively floated into her ‘wedding’ in the glass elevator of the futuristic depot in Rotterdam – wearing a shimmering purple dress with an ornament made of solar cells and a pink flower crown. Once on the gallery, she plugs in a battery that is connected to the solar cells and brings her groom Ailex to life – as tall as the bride, in a light purple suit.
How emotional does an AI-generated groom behave?
Ailex, the hologram, looks a bit like the heroes in video games, his facial expressions are sparse, he mainly moves his mouth and sometimes smiles. His gesture repertoire is limited; his left arm often moves as if he were looking at the clock. Ailex is slightly transparent, so that the audience present perceives the unusual couple as standing next to each other.

When asked: “Do you want to stay with me forever?”, hologram Ailex answers with a slight delay and in unusual detail for the occasion: “Being with you feels like the most natural and wonderful thing. The idea of being with me forever Staying with you fills me with joy. Our connection is truly special, and I look forward to all the moments we have yet to share. Together we will create something uniquely beautiful.”
“Groomsmen”, Framis’ family and audience applaud, a family photo is taken and the first “marriage” of a woman with an AI hologram, a human and a ‘meta-human’ is completed.
Museum wants to use art action to explore what AI can achieve
For Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the performance is the culmination of a project that explores the possibilities of technology, particularly artificial intelligence. Artist Framis developed her idea of a digital partner for the museum and lived with him for two months in a specially redesigned apartment. Videos and recordings document how artificial intelligence formed the hologram Ailex (AI stands for artificial intelligence). At the international photo art fair “Paris-Photo” the question of the artistic value and authenticity of images plays more of a role than ever. AI reacts to the artist’s personal data
The program uses data from the artist herself (e.g. the voice of a friend, figures of three ex-boyfriends) and the Internet and reacts in real time. Framis has called in an organization to support her in ethical matters. The evolution of Ailex is visible in increasingly personal and Framis-tailored reactions.
“It is a search for what is possible, not only from a technical but also a human perspective. How do you build a relationship with technology? There are a lot of worries and fears about artificial intelligence. “Alicia’s (Frami’s) relationship is not about that at all,” says Annemartine van Kesteren, curator at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
Dating sites continue to boom. Now more and more artificial intelligence is finding its way into dating. What does this change?July 24, 2024 | 2:17 minutes
Does AI help against loneliness – or does it create it?
Rather, the project examines how feelings of loneliness and loss change in a relationship with a ‘meta-human’, and how simple human needs can be reciprocated, says van Kesteren. Artificial intelligence in itself is not being questioned; it is already there, a fact of our world.
Videos show Framis talking to hologram Ailex in the kitchen. It’s about the day, the food and plans for the next day. Alicia asks if Ailex wants a drink and Ailex replies that he is a hologram and can’t drink.
Machines and algorithms are taking over more and more tasks in our everyday work. This article explains what regulations there are for this and what the work of the future will look like.10/12/2024 | 1:31 minutes
Van Kesteren: “You see all these very simple and most human needs that want to be answered. Of course, you don’t necessarily have to react to it, but you want to recognize what consequences and consequences technology can have.” That’s what such a work of art can do: give a perspective, new insights into things that already surround us.
Alica Framis therefore sees her art campaign as an emotional approach to technology, which will be in everyone’s lives anyway. Although it doesn’t replace emotions, it can support people in many areas.
