Artificial Intelligence and Undergraduate Business Education: Insights from EFMD Conference 2021

From November 15 to 17, the dean of the Turība School of Business, Evija Kļave, participated in the annual conference of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) on the current affairs of bachelor’s degree programs in business management, which took place in Hungary, at Budapest’s Corvinus University. The theme of this year’s conference is “Artificial Intelligence and Undergraduate Business Education: Where Are We and Where Are We Going?”

Bachelor’s programs are a stepping stone to a professional career and for many young people it is the first contact with academia. Considering the changing preferences of the new generation of students, education in bachelor’s programs also has its own unique challenges. And one such challenge is the “entry” of artificial intelligence into the higher education process.

The rise of generative artificial intelligence has forced business schools around the world to think about how to deal with artificial intelligence, how to avoid students using artificial intelligence for plagiarism. In a broader perspective, it is a question of how the purpose of business universities is changing? What value do universities bring to students for their future careers in a situation where artificial intelligence will be able to do the same work faster and cheaper? How will artificial intelligence affect the labor market? What skills do employers expect from graduates of business universities? What is it that still remains and will remain up to man?

Right now, there are more questions than answers, and we are all in the process of what we call “learning by doing.” Business universities develop their own guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the study process, recommendations for students, review assessment methods and work to effectively use artificial intelligence as a resource in both administrative and teaching work. Turiba is on the same page with the world’s business education creators and providers.

Turība Business School joined the European Management Development Fund in 2018. Currently, Turība’s business management programs are undergoing an international accreditation process to join world-renowned universities and their programs.
EFMD is an international non-profit association, Europe’s largest network association in the field of management development, with more than 890 member organizations from academia, business, public service and consultancy in 88 countries.

EFMD manages the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), which is one of the leading international quality assessment, improvement and accreditation systems for management and business administration higher education institutions.
