Article 99: Israel says Guterres period is a threat to world peace; Amnesty called the alarm for peace Madhyamam

Tel Aviv: Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen is against United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who came up with an urgent move to implement a ceasefire in Gaza. Guterres, who asked the members of the Security Council to urgently intervene in Gaza, invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter, angered Israel.

The Secretary General’s rare move came at a time when the UN Security Council has not yet approved the ceasefire resolution. Israel’s response was that Guterres is a supporter of Hamas.

“The Guterres regime is a danger to world peace. His invocation of Article 99 and his call for a cease-fire in Gaza are in support of the terrorist organization Hamas. It is the approval of killing the elderly, abducting babies and raping women,’ said Eli Cohen.

At the same time, many countries and various organizations including the World Health Organization have come forward in support of Antonio Guterres. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the World Health Organization (WHO), said a ceasefire in Gaza was essential. “I support Antonio Guterres’ letter to the Security Council under Article 99 requesting a ceasefire. Gaza’s health system has collapsed. “We need peace for the health system to function,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called the humanitarian disaster in Gaza intolerable. “I extend all my support to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres who invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter. “I completely agree with the reasons you gave for the call to the Security Council,” said Pedro Sánchez.

Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard said that Article 99 is a rarely used alarm for international peace and security.

Article 99 is a clause that calls for the intervention of the Security Council in emergency situations such as war. China, Russia, US, UK and France are permanent members of the 15-member Security Council. The United States vetoed the cease-fire resolution. It is in this context that Guterres intervened two months after the Israeli attack on Gaza.
