Full box for the arthouse cinema in Rennes. This summer, the Arvor is experiencing a boom in attendance: the public is there and some shows are sold out on weekends. “Last week, we made 5,400 admissions against 2,000 in 2022, at the same time”, rejoices Patrick Fretel, the president of the association which manages the cinema. According to him, this week’s scores, due out on Wednesday, will be as good as the previous week.
“We’ve never experienced that,” continues the president, who recalls that the start of the year was already excellent with 70,000 admissions in the 1st quarter of 2023. is not just people passing through,” he continues. Usually, in July and August, movie theaters are less crowded than for the whole year. The reasons for this success: the bad weather, which persists in the Breton capital, and the headliners which attract the public.
“Oppenheimer” and “Green Algae”
“We are drawn by two films: Oppenheimer, by Christopher Nolan, and Les Algues vertes, by Pierre Jolivet”, observes Patrick Fretel. “Compared to last summer, we broke the ceilings in just two weeks this year,” adds the president of the association.
Since moving to 11 rue de Châtillon in November 2021, after 38 years spent on rue d’Antrain, the cinema has seen great progress. To date, it has already recorded 140,000 admissions since the beginning of the year and intends to exceed the objective set for 2023, namely 200,000 admissions. “We will cross it without too much difficulty”, proudly admits the president.
By way of comparison, the Arvor had recorded 170,000 admissions in 2022 and 107,000 admissions in 2021, over just 7 months, due to the closing of cinemas linked to Covid.
