Defeat from Everton leaves a bitterness for the manager Arsenal Mikel Arteta. Penalties canceled to astonish him.
Arsenal lost 0-1 at home to Everton at the Emirates Stadium, Saturday (24/4/2021) in the morning WIB in the continuation Premier League. The only goal that distinguished the two sides was Bernd Leno’s own goal in the 76th minute.
Overall, The Gunners appear more dominant. The north London club had 14 shots with three on target, while Everton had eight attempts and only one on target.
But it is more than that, one thing that makes Mikel Arteta more upsetting was the penalty canceled by the Video Assistant Referee. In the 53rd minute, Arsenal were awarded a penalty by the referee after Dani Ceballos was blocked by Richarlison.
But the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the incident, then found that Nicolas Pepe was in a position deemed offside when Arsenal built the attack. The replay showed a very slim offside.
“On the pitch in performance, we are the better team. We controlled the game and had a number of opportunities and gaps. We had a clear penalty that was canceled somehow, then we scored an own goal,” Mikel Arteta was quoted as saying BBC.
“The penalty is clear, the cancellation decisions were made after that. I don’t know how or by whom, we can’t look their faces for an explanation.”
“This is the second time in two weeks. I can see the pictures 20 times and I don’t understand,” he added.
At the same time, Arteta admits that his team is not good enough to dismantle Everton. In the end they were punished by their own mistakes.
“Mistakes are part of football, we scored an own goal that decided the match in the end. We didn’t create enough chances against a team that played neatly, we lacked clarity in the final third,” continued Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal is now in ninth place in the Premier League with 46 points from 33 matches. They are six points behind Everton in eighth position who have played just 32 times.
