Artemis II astronauts use to open the side hatches of the Orion craft

JAKARTA – All astronauts for the Artemis II mission visited Lockheed Martin in Littleton, Colorado to undergo advanced training. This time, the four members of the team were asked to work with the Orion flight hat.

The clothes are a very important part to learn. While in the Lockheed Martin training room, the astronauts were asked to open and close the side hatch on the Orion model so that they would have no problem running.

Of course, the four astronauts will not open and close the hatch independently during the Artemis II mission. The systems control team at Kennedy Space Center will close the rear hatch before the craft departs from the launch pad.

When the plane comes back to Earth, right in the Pacific Ocean, the recovery team will open the side hatch to help the whole crew get out of the plane. Nevertheless, astronauts must know how to close and open hatches in an emergency.

NASA explains that the side hatch can be opened using a manual gearbox system. However, this method cannot be done quickly. Therefore, astronauts are also taught how to open hatches by other means.

“In an emergency, the hatch has a release mechanism that contains a small pyrotechnic (explosive) device that immediately releases the latch pin on the hatch, so that the hatch can be opened quickly,” NASA said in its official release.

Previously, NASA announced four astronauts who were selected as part of the Artemis II crew. They are NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Reid Wiseman, as well as Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

In addition to training the four astronauts on how to operate the sidecar, NASA also trained two members of the reserve team, namely NASA astronaut Andre Douglas and CSA astronaut Jenny Gibbons. When your crew is unable to fly, this reserve crew replaces them.
