SPACE — The crew of astronauts for the Artemis 2 mission begin training for the lunar mission. This is the first lunar crew in 50 years since the Apollo era. The team will be trained to carry out the highly anticipated mission. Returning humans to the Moon.
The crew has about 18 months to get ready for launch day. Six weeks after the four Artemis 2 astronauts were announced at a ceremony in Houston, the group will begin learning everything they need to circumnavigate the moon during the mission. Artemis 2 missions will launch no earlier than November 2024.
The astronauts will be the first humans to fly aboard NASA’s Space Launch System megarocket and aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft. Both of these vehicle systems were successfully tested during last year’s Artemis 1 mission.

For information, on the Artemis 1 mission, there is no human crew. Trials were carried out with a mannequin in it.
“We are building a strong training program for the crew to ensure they are ready for every aspect of the first mission to the moon under Artemis, with our newest spacecraft and rockets,” said Jacki Mahaffey, principal training officer for the Artemis 2 crew. from Space.com.
Specific preparation includes exercises on how Orion and SLS behave during launch, going to the moon and back, re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere and landing, especially with regard to emergency situations.
Also integral to this exercise is learning how to remotely communicate with Mission Control and recovery teams. These exercises will begin in earnest about 12 months before launch.
NASA’s Artemis program aims to return humans to the moon for the first time since Apollo. The Apollo missions sent 24 people into lunar orbit or surface between 1968 and 1972. Artemis will take advantage of more than 50 years of technological developments to better program.
The crew will also be more diverse than the Apollo. The Apollo missions only flew white males.
Artemis 2’s astronaut missions are more diverse. The four Artemis 2 astronauts are NASA commander Reid Wiseman, NASA pilot Victor Glover (the first black astronaut to leave low Earth orbit), NASA mission specialist Christina Koch (the first woman on a lunar mission) and Jeremy Hansen (the first Canadian to leave). outside Earth orbit.) They all have months of experience on International Space Station missions.
