Art – New York City – US Artist Duncan Hannah Died – Culture

Berlin / New York (dpa) – The US artist Duncan Hannah is dead. The painter and author died on Saturday at the age of 70 north of New York in West Cornwall, as the Rowohlt publishing house in Berlin announced on Tuesday. His work can be found in many private collections and can be seen at the Chicago Art Institute and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others.

The publisher calls Hannah “one of the most unusual artists in the USA”. Born in Minneapolis, Hannah came to New York at the age of 18 to study painting. There he became part of the legendary scene around artists like Andy Warhol and David Hockney. Patti Smith, David Bowie and Lou Reed were also among his contacts.

He described this time, the attitude to life and the excesses in “Dive”, his diary from the 70s. “I’m a product of the second half of the century, a 20th-century boy,” he said. For him, art and life were closely linked.
