An Austrian from Canada will head the prestigious Frankfurt Art Academy from October 1st. What awaits her there?
The new director of the Städelschule – Hesse’s only university for fine arts – considers the educational institution to be one of the most important art schools in Europe. “It is unique in its mandate to give students as much freedom and space as possible to develop their artistic work and their thinking,” Barbara Clausen told the German Press Agency.
Clausen will take office on October 1st. The term of office is five years. She succeeds Yasmil Raymond, who held the office from 2020 to 2024 and left early at her own request. Clausen, an Austrian born in 1970, looks back on over two decades of experience as a curator, educator and art historian. Most recently, she was professor of contemporary art and performance in Montreal, Canada, since 2011. Frankfurt knows her from a visiting professorship at Goethe University in 2023.
200 year old tradition
The Städel School is over 200 years old. It goes back to a foundation by the Frankfurt citizen Johann Friedrich Städel. In his will in 1815 he founded the “Städelsche Kunstinstitut”. This gave rise to the museum named after him, but also a training center. From 1817 onwards, this was made possible in the form of scholarships from his assets. Young people interested in an artistic education should be supported regardless of gender, religion or social background. Since 2019, the Städel School has been sponsored by the state.
