On December 3, at 4:00 p.m., the “Art IS Cool” exhibition of paintings by Artas Butes, a well-known artist in Latvia, will be opened in the exhibition hall of the Mālpils Culture Center. This will be the second meeting with the painter in Mālpil.
“Artis Bute (1958) has been one of the most sought-after Latvian artists by exhibition visitors and art collectors for more than three decades. His original style and delicate execution of his works attract attention, regardless of the context in which they appear,” writes art critic Vilnis Vējš.
“During his career, the artist has painted both figurative compositions and strongly ornamental and quite abstract works, but even in classical landscapes and still lifes, his unique handwriting can be seen – the silhouette or background area of each subject fits into a rhythmic, logically thought-out structure. There is no room for chance or spontaneity in it Bute’s works include references to the past era – Art Nouveau and art deco art, the search for which can turn into a special entertainment for the erudite viewer.
Artas Bute’s painting is characterized by an infallible sense of balance when arranging the elements of the composition, as well as precision in the details and all areas are painted equally densely. Although the purpose of the paintings is not to create the illusion of space, the compositions preserve the division of the foreground, middle and deeper planes. Therefore, Bute’s works can be read in two ways – both as a representation of subject and spatial reality, and as geometric equations solved on the plane of the painting,” says V. Vējš.
Artis Bute has collaborated with many art institutions in Latvia and European countries, most recently with the prestigious Rietumu banka gallery in Riga. His works are owned by the Latvian National Art Museum and many private collectors.
