How is the city changing, who is acting in public and what can cultural participation look like in the digital age in view of the corona pandemic? Students at the Caspar David Friedrich Institute (CDFI) at the University of Greifswald dealt with these questions in the project “Public Art – Advertising Column as Mass Medium (Vol. II)”. In cooperation with the Art Academy for Media Cologne (KHM) they designed 250 advertising pillars in Düsseldorf. The temporary artistic intervention will start on January 26, 2021.

In the past year, many artistic projects had to be postponed and canceled. Museums, galleries, places of art and culture were closed and exhibitions could not take place. It became all the more clear that art has an important role to play in our society. In times when the majority of everyday life takes place in your own four walls, walks through the city are a highlight. Advertising pillars are omnipresent. In the outdoor areas originally intended for advertising, art is now becoming part of urban culture. The changes in the cityscape not only offer a change from the digital world. They are also available to everyone, easily accessible and free of charge. The project gives artists the chance to exhibit their own works and communicate with society.
“The dynamics of the posters make it clear that the pandemic does not mean a standstill for art. The analog advertising pillar becomes a large-format communication platform away from social media and digitality. The permanent visual sensory overload in front of the screens is interrupted by the original works of art. In the sadness of isolation, visual stimuli are increasingly perceived and the public space becomes a permanent exhibition and a moment of hope, ”reports Prof. Rozbeh Asmani from Caspar David Friedrich Institute (CDFI) from the University of Greifswald. He led the project together with Prof. Zil Lilas from the Art Academy for Media Cologne.
For the first lockdown of the Covid 19 pandemic, 49 advertising pillars and large areas were designed as part of a seminar with students in Greifswald. This winter, the art campaign in the public space in Düsseldorf goes into the second round.
The project is supported by Ilg-Außenwerbung GmbH and Nordplakat eK.
