Art exhibition «Unjurierte 21» falls victim to the Winterthur emergency budget – TOP ONLINE

The preparation of the exhibition had to be suspended because of the emergency budget, the city of Winterthur announced on Friday. With the emergency budget of the city of Winterthur, only the absolutely necessary expenses should be made. An art exhibition is clearly not one of them, says Nicole Kurmann, head of the culture department at the city of Winterthur, opposite RADIO TOP. Contracts cannot be concluded under these circumstances.

The «Unjurierte» takes place every four years and offers professional and less professional artists a platform. As the name suggests, there is no jury. Everyone can take part.

«Unjured» lives from personal encounters

The ongoing Corona crisis is also causing planning uncertainty. The exhibition lives from personal encounters and attracts many visitors. Last year, 8,000 people admired the works of art by over 300 artists. A virtual alternative would therefore have been very difficult to implement anyway.

Culture area cannot really work due to emergency budget

With the emergency budget, the work in the cultural sector is very difficult. Every issue has to be questioned and usually receives a no for the answer, says Nicole Kurmann. That means that the employees of the cultural department in Winterthur cannot really do their work in the first quarter of 2021.

The municipal council had sent the city council’s budget proposal back in October for improvement. The new proposal with a less drastic tax increase is now available, but will not be dealt with by the local council until January.
