Art: Cinema as an art space: Exhibition opened

The former youth cinema in Frankfurt (Oder) will become a place for art even before it is planned to be converted into a museum.

The dilapidated charm of the decaying building provides inspiration for artistic works and exhibitions. On Saturday, the show “Filmriss” of the artists’ community “Endmoräne” was opened by Brandenburg’s Minister of Culture Manja Schüle (SPD) opened. The city on the Oder has developed into one of the most exciting cultural hotspots in Brandenburg, she said enthusiastically. The exhibition was funded by the Ministry of Culture, the city, the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung and the Ministry of Economics.

For the exhibition, the artists familiarized themselves with the premises of the former cinema in a workshop for 14 days. According to the ministry, temporary works were created that deal with the special features of the place and the decay. The show can be seen until July 17, 2022.

In the Endmoräne association, up to 20 individual artists have been working together in a loose group for 32 years. Once a year, art projects are realized in abandoned places and local actors are involved. As a result of the exhibition, a cracked film will be continued and expanded to include new narratives and images, said the director of the Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art, Ulrike Kremeier.

“The past and importance of the building are closely linked to many of Frankfurt’s life stories,” added Mayor René Wilke (left). The reflections of the artists are all the more exciting when viewed from the outside.

The cinema was the first cinema to be built in Frankfurt (Oder) at the beginning of the 20th century and was rebuilt in 1954 after severe damage during the war. Until it was closed in 1998, the cinema was used for cultural events, among other things. In 2019, the city took over the listed building and made it available for the construction of the new location of the Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art (BLMK) in the Oderstadt. Construction is scheduled to start in 2025, and the museum is scheduled to open at the end of 2028. The state is supporting the conversion with 11.5 million euros.
