Starting this month, the National Art Museum of Catalonia It expands the number of its rooms dedicated to the art of the Civil War period. Its collections have increased to show 108 pieces (including paintings, drawings, engravings, photographs, sculptures and paper money) by 43 artists, many of them previously unpublished in this center.
This new presentation incorporates relevant novelties, such as a space dedicated to the Pavilion of the Republic of the Paris Exposition of 1937, with works lost for a long time; a space dedicated to the situation of women in times of war and another focused on propaganda, photojournalism and cinema. Along with well-known works by artists such as Picasso or Julio González, there is now room for other stories and creations born as an immediate response by the artists of our country to the war conflict.
The new rooms now open to the public are the epicenter of the work that the MNAC has been dedicating to the Civil War and the rescue of the artistic heritage in that context, which has had as a precedent the installation of the artist Francesc Torres Aeronautics (Flight) interior and the temporary exhibitions “The infinite war. Antoni Campañà ”and“ Museum in danger! Safeguarding Catalan art during the Civil War ”, along with an extensive public program of face-to-face and online activities.
