From October 17 to February 24, the Louis Vuitton Foundation will hold the exhibition “Pop forever“, dedicated to pop art. The opportunity for the 20 Hours to look at the history of this artistic movement, born from advertising in the United States, at the advent of the consumer society.
After the war, the United States was in turmoil, with a booming economy. This was the birth of the consumer society, and with it, advertising. Advertising is everywhere. It attacks screens, walls and minds. Artists like Andrew WarholRoy Lichtenstein or Tom Wesselmann will grab it. In their creations, they use all advertising codes: garish colors, industrial materials and unbalanced shapes. The art should be large and attractive. “Pop art took art outside of museums”explains Dieter Buchhart, co-curator of the “Pop forever” exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Foundation.
Pop artists want to explode the boundaries between art and everyday life. Ultimate motivation: passing familiar objects down to the future, such as a hair dryer, lipstick or a soup carton. Between criticism and interest in a consumer society, pop art questions itself. This artistic movement dreamed of popular culture. Today, with its bright colors, nostalgic universe and millions of copies, it is the most perfect incarnation.
