Arson Suspect Released After 7 Months of Pre-Trial Detention in Bayonne Case

This criminal qualification is aimed at “an arson occurring under conditions likely to expose people to bodily harm or to create irreversible damage to the environment”.

7 months of pre-trial detention

Arrested on August 5, 2020, after a quick investigation by the Bayonne judicial police, the suspect would have boasted of his act to his comrades at the Bayonne home where he was welcomed, before going back on his statements.

He was released in May 2021 by the investigating chamber of the Pau Court of Appeal, after 7 months in pre-trial detention. “The logical continuation of the dispute of the facts by my client”, had then observed the lawyer of the indicted, Me Agnès Hauciarce-Rey.

It is now up to an examining magistrate to decide whether or not to refer the defendant to the assize court for minors. Knowing that such a decision could also be appealed to the investigating chamber.
