Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left out of Arsenal’s match squad as a “disciplinary action” in the 3-0 victory against Southampton last. Coach Mikel Arteta said in connection with the match that the team captain acted in a way that the club considers unacceptable.
– I think we have certain things that are not acceptable, which we set up as a team. That is why he is not involved today, Arteta told Sky Sports before the match and continued:
– It is not an easy situation and it is not a situation we want our team captain in.
According to The Athletic, the investigation was due to the fact that Aubameyang was recently granted permission to travel abroad for personal reasons, but then returned later than agreed. For that reason, he is said to have missed Friday’s training due to current coronary restrictions in England.
Now Arsenal are acting further. In a press release, the London club confirms that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang deprived of the captain’s armband. In addition, the forward will not be available for the selection for the team’s next match against West Ham on Wednesday.
“We expect all our players, especially our team captain, to work according to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed on,” Arsenal wrote in the press release.
Arsenal have had problems with team captains who do not follow the club’s rules or act inappropriately in the past. In 2019, Granit Xhaka got rid of the captain’s armband after that have gestured towards Arsenal fans in connection with his replacement. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang then took over as the new team captain, a responsibility he thus had for just over two years.
