Arsenal may be the best in the Premier League, but the cost of their starting XI is quite low compared to their rivals.
The Gunners had splurged on more cash than any other team in England’s top flight in 2021, spending big on bringing in stars like Ben White, Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
However, fast forward to the end of 2022, Mikel Arteta’s side were ninth in terms of spending, paying £118.86m for transfers that include Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
That kind of money isn’t peanuts, but contrary to what fans would think given their status as leaders of the Premier League, their decline in transfer costs is reflected in the squad that has sat them at the top of the table.
Favorite right-back White was the Gunners’ most expensive signing in the 2021 summer window, recruiting him from Brighton for £50m.
But apart from the England international, Arsenal have a talented squad that costs less than that price.
So how much did each of the Gunners’ XI cost and how do their fees compare to their top six rivals, we hear you ask?
We have all the details for you right here…
Arsenal
Starting in the Gunners’ attack, star winger Bukayo Saka has been with the club since he was seven years old, when he signed from Watford as a youngster.
But while Arsenal’s other two main forwards saw the north London side having to pocket themselves, they paid just £6m for Gabriel Martinelli while Gabriel Jesus cost £45m.
In midfield, Granit Xhaka and current captain Martin Odegaard cost £30m respectively, while Thomas Partey cost them £45m.
Arsenal’s back-line is also worth less than £50m, with £25m going on Kieran Tierney, £23m on Gabriel, £27m on William Saliba and £24m on first choice goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Now that Mykhailo Mudryk’s goal appears to cost too much, they could move on to other alternatives. Shakthar is believed to want compensation for his attacker in the same group as Jack Grealish and Antony.
Manchester City
Despite the arrival of superstar striker Erling Haaland in the summer, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City recorded the sixth-biggest Premier League spending in the summer window.
But despite failing to rob so far this season, their starting XI boast plenty of stars costing more than £50m.
Unsurprisingly, Haaland cost Man City a pretty penny, with an upfront fee of £51m which could rise to £85.5m in total when factoring in agent fees, signing bonus and other costs .
Although a start in Pep Guardiola’s squad isn’t always guaranteed, Jack Grealish cost £100m when he signed from Aston Villa in 2021. Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne signed for £55m in 2015.
Newcastle
After their big money buyout in 2020, it wouldn’t be surprising if Newcastle boast players worth over £50m.
However, it was the round of 16 that spent the most in the 2022 transfer window, signing Nick Pope for £10m and other stars arriving for a similarly modest fee previously.
But Eddie Howe’s side have a star who has seen the Magpies part ways with over £50m.
Although currently out injured, the summer signing of Alexander Isak cost the Magpies £58m, a club record fee.
Manchester United
Erik ten Hag was tasked with rebuilding Manchester United’s squad when he arrived this summer, and his £214m window outlay means they boast several big-money stars.
Brazilian winger Antony arrived at Old Trafford for £88m at the start of the season.
Meanwhile, former Real Madrid star Casemiro bid farewell to the Red Devils with £70m.
2022 World Cup winner with Argentina, Lisandro Martinez also passed the £50m mark when he signed with Ajax, Ten Hag’s former club Man United paying £56.7m pounds.
tottenham
Although Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is criticized by fans for being reluctant to spend big on transfers, Antonio Conte’s side still boast a player who costs more than any north London rival.
That player was also the club’s most expensive summer signing, former Everton star Richarlison, who joined Spurs for £60m.
Meanwhile, the Spurs drafted Ivan Perisic for free in the summer. Yves Bissouma also fixed them half of White’s cost at £25m in the last window.
Liverpool
The Reds’ latest addition to their squad will cost just under £50m, with Dutch star Cody Gakpo set to sign for a fee that could rise to £47m.
In 2017, fan-favourite Mohamed Salah signed for Liverpool for a club record transfer fee of £36.9m, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for £35m from Arsenal.
But the Reds are counting on the summer signing of Darwin Núñez, who cost more than £50m after being signed by Benfica for £64m.
Players such as Virgil van Dijk and Alisson also cost more than Ben White, signing for £75m and £67m respectively.
chelsea
The Blues were the biggest spenders in the Premier League in the summer of 2022.
While their league position may not show it, since Todd Boehly took over at Chelsea the club has spent nearly £300m, so it’s no surprise that their squad boast stars costing more than £50m.
Wesley Fofana has signed from Leicester for £80m, while Marc Cucurella has joined for £62m from Brighton.
Now, it appears they are set to sign Argentine star Enzo Fernández for more than double White’s fee, around £112m.
