25-year-old Ramsdale writes in The Players Tribune about his brother Oliver and calls him “the real superstar in the family”.
“My brother is gay and he has lived his life in an open and real way since he started school,” writes the Arsenal goalkeeper.
“Over the years, I’ve probably bit my tongue a little too many times – in dressing rooms and on social media – when I’ve heard homophobic comments or stupid things being said. I also think maybe my brother has done the same thinking it would make my life easier. Well, all that ends today,” writes Ramsdale.
In football, there are incredibly few men who have come out as gay, especially in top football. The incitement, on the other hand, has, and still does, manifest itself in several cases.
A Fulham supporter was banned from matches for three years and fined last month after singing along to a homophobic song. Wolverhampton was fined over NOK 1 million for similar behavior from supporters.
Ramsdale naturally dreams of winning trophies with Arsenal, but also has another dream:
“I want this game I love to be a safe and generous place for everyone. I want my brother ‘Ollie’, or anyone of any sexuality, race or religion, to come to matches without fear of incitement,” writes the last chance.
