Arsenal defender William Saliba is set to make his French debut in this international break, having been recalled to Didier Deschamps’ side following Benjamin Pavard’s withdrawal.
The reigning world champions will play friendlies against the Ivory Coast and South Africa over the next two weeks as they prepare to defend their crown in Qatar in November.
And, after his eye-catching performances on loan at Olympique de Marseille this season, Saliba was rewarded with his first cap. The Blues senior team

The 20-year-old has made 28 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, helping his team to second place in the process as he has been part of a defense that has kept a clean sheet 11 times, second in the division and ahead of the League. 1 giants Paris Saint Germain.
In an ironic twist of fate, the Frenchman, who signed for Arsenal in 2019, could make his national team debut before his club debut as he had never played for Arsenal’s Under-23s during his time at North London.
What future for Saliba?
Saliba will return to Arsenal with four seasons of the best football under his belt at the age of 21, a huge boost for someone so young. But come summer, he will only have two years left to fulfill his current contract at the Emirates, not to mention a new contract in progress.
If he stayed, he would probably form a defensive rotation with fellow young defenders Gabriel and Ben White, who have been excellent for the Gunners this season. With the number of games Arsenal will play next season increasing with European football likely to be on the table again, there will be plenty of football to be done.
