Arsenal could chase the Real Betis midfielder who is rarely used

Like most teams, Arsenal is expected to review available talent in the January transfer window.

So soon, it seems that the Gunners already have a goal in mind.

According to CalcioMercato, Arsenal have their sights set on William Carvalho.

If the name sounds familiar to you, it is because the 29-year-old is the same player Arsene Winger had in his sights before Euro 2016.

However, the Portuguese footballer chose to stay with Sporting Lisbon, moving to Real Betis in June 2018.

Unfortunately, Carvalho hasn’t had consistent playing time. This season alone, he started in just five games. In the other three games he played, he came in as a substitute.

Carvalho is in the final 18 months of his contract with Verdes. His current contract will expire in June 2023, and it is now rumored that he could switch to English football.

While a move to Emirates Stadium looks good on paper, there may be no guarantee that it will get the exposure it wants.

Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka are leading the way and are widely supported by Albert Lokonga.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is another option, although there is a chance he could leave Arsenal soon.

Therefore, Carvalho may be a sensible choice to reinforce midfield or Arsenal in the January transfer window.

But when it comes to getting more playtime, that may be another matter.

It’s also worth noting that for the move to take place, the Gunners would have to work out a termination clause in the Portuguese footballer’s current deal, Marca reported.

That amount is roughly £ 100 million ($ 138 million), a large amount of money that may not make sense to Mikel Arteta and anyone else.

In a related development, it appears that Arsenal’s bid for Sardar Azmoun has taken a major hit.

According to the Iranian’s agent through HITC, the 26-year-old forward will not be leaving Zenit St. Petersburg.

Azmoun has less than 12 months left on his current deal with Sine-Belo-Golubye and is valued at £ 22.5 million ($ 31 million).

This season, he has scored seven goals in 10 league games.
