Arsenal beat Leeds 2-1 and caresses return to the Champions League

Accompanied by a brace from Eddie Nketiah, Arsenal beat Leeds 2-1 on Sunday and came within a whisker of ending a five-year exile from the Champions League by clinging to fourth place in the English Premier League.

If they beat Tottenham on Thursday, Arsenal will qualify for Europe’s top tournament two dates early. Their classic North London rivals are fifth after drawing 1-1 with Liverpool on Saturday.

Arsenal moved four points clear of Tottenham thanks to Nketiah’s two goals in the first 10 minutes. Leeds fell back into the relegation zone.

Leeds played with 10 men from the 27th minute after captain Luke Ayling was sent off for a rough tackle on Gabriel Martinelli. Referee Chris Kavanagh initially booked the defender with a yellow card but ended up changing it to red after consulting the VAR.

The visitors discounted at 66 due to the Spanish defender Diego Llorente.

EUROPA LEAGUE

Said Benrahma scored twice as West Ham dispatched Norwich 4-0 and the east London club remain in the race to outperform Manchester United and qualify for the Europa League.

Michail Antonio and Argentina’s Manuel Lanzini scored the other two goals for West Ham, which remains in seventh place. That position gives them access to the Europa Conference League, but David Moyes’s team is just three points behind the sixth step with two games remaining and one less than United in the bid for the Europa League ticket.

DESCENT

The fight is red hot to define the third team that will lose the category, accompanying Watford and Norwich.

Everton took an important step towards salvation by beating Leicester 2-1. The victory left Everton 16th in the table with 35 points, one more than Burnley and Leeds, as well as having one game more than their rivals in the fight against relegation.
