With Pigalle, 1950 (of which we followed all the steps), Jean-Michel Arroyo evokes the vibrant Paris of the 1950s, that of the Butte Montmartre, its cabarets, its dancers, its gangsters and its schemes. For the album, the artist adopts a sepia color palette and a wash drawing in shades of brown. An elegant and retro style that fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the time and gives substance to this atypical thriller signed Pierre Christin. From the Moulin-Rouge via the Café de Flore or the Gaumont-Palace cinema, Arroyo with Pigalle, 1950 revisits unmissable places in Paris in the atmosphere of the 50s, restoring their splendor of the time. A timeless charm emerges from his original plates and illustrations, some sixty of which will be presented in the exhibition, as well as originals from his albums of Buck Danny Classic .
Maël – Our America. Chicago Red Sky, original unpublished illustration (2022), signed. Watercolour, Indian ink and sepia ink on paper. 61 x 46cm
For his second exhibition at the gallery, Mael features originals from all four albums in its series Our America , scripted by Kris. This saga begins in the aftermath of the Great War and explores the 1920s, first in Mexico, then in the United States , alongside Max and Julien, two young people whose destiny was shattered by the war. After Between the lines et Our Mother War , Maël demonstrates once again the extent of his talent in the historical genre, his favorite register. His easily recognizable style, made of an elegant line drawn with a pen and a coloring in watercolor, perfectly captures the tone of this breathless story with the allure of a western and then a whodunit. Maël was able to find a variety of shades in his color palette which allows him to create remarkable atmospheres throughout the saga. More than a hundred originals of Our America will be presented in the exhibition, as well as illustrations specially produced for the event and plates from the series Our Mother War .
