It was reported that Israel’s missile defense system ‘Arrow’ intercepted a ballistic missile outside the Earth’s atmosphere for the first time. This ballistic missile is believed to have been launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, targeting Eilat, the southernmost city in Israel.

According to the British Telegraph and the Israeli Jerusalem Post on the 5th (local time), the Israel Defense Forces used a missile defense system to intercept a ballistic missile fired by Yemeni Houthi rebels toward the Israeli port city of Eilat on the 31st of last month. The Israel Defense Forces used the ‘Arrow’ missile defense system to shoot down a ballistic missile outside Earth’s atmosphere, in what is believed to be the first battle fought in space, the Telegraph reported. Israel did not release details about the intercept. “The air force system tracked the missile’s trajectory and intercepted it at the most appropriate operational time and location,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

The Israel Defense Forces released a video showing the moment of the interception. Additionally, photos taken in Eilat showed traces of smoke coming from the Arrow interceptor, and residents reported hearing a loud explosion on the ground.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels also released a video showing missiles being fired as part of an attack targeting Israeli towns and cities. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for Yemen’s Houthi rebels, issued a statement on the same day, saying, “Our troops have launched numerous ballistic missiles and drones against various Israeli targets in the occupied territories,” adding, “This is the third operation targeting Israel. “The attacks will continue until Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip stops,” he said.

The online military website ‘Army Rekognition’ analyzed the video posted by the Houthi rebels and said that the missile fired at Israel was believed to be a Burkan-3, a modified version of the Burkan ballistic missile. The Burkan-3 missile is known to have a range of up to 1,200 km and can reach targets deep within Israeli territory.

The Jerusalem Post reported that Israel’s Arrow missile defense system also intercepted a Hamas long-range missile launched from the Gaza Strip into the skies of the Negev Desert on the 4th.

Arrow, jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), is the highest level defense system in Israel’s national layered defense system. Arrow-2 is used to block ballistic missiles entering the atmosphere and Arrow-3 is outside the atmosphere. It was designed to be shot down. ‘Iron Dome’ is a system aimed at destroying short-range rockets and mortars, and ‘David Sling’ is specialized for intercepting cruise missiles.

Arrow was used to shoot down an S-200 surface-to-air missile launched by Syrian government forces toward an Israeli fighter jet in 2017, and this is said to be the first time it has been used for its original purpose of shooting down a ballistic missile. An Israeli Defense Ministry official said, “A successful intercept means more than just protecting the people of Eilat and dealing a blow to the arrogance of the Houthi rebels,” adding, “It is a testament to Israel’s ability to respond with a missile defense system to Iran, which was behind the missile launch and supplied the missile. “It proves that this exists,” he said.
