Onana was Ajax’s first goalkeeper from the 2016/2017 season, excelled and became a public favourite. After his doping suspension and not wanting to extend his contract, the mood around the Cameroonian turned completely. He seemed to be on his way to the exit without playing time, but due to injuries to Remko Pasveer, Maarten Stekelenburg and Jay Gorter, he came back into the picture and became the first goalkeeper in a crucial phase of the season.
‘Ten Hag must intervene’
Last Saturday, Onana led the opening goal of the visitors against Sparta against Sparta and was whistled by part of the home crowd. Afterwards he had little appetite for the usual thanking of the fans, much to the visible annoyance of his fellow players.
Ibrahim Afellay believes that coach Erik ten Hag should address his keeper about this behaviour. “The trainer has to intervene,” says Afellay. “He has to tell Onana: everyone doesn’t want me to act like you, but I give you confidence and then you shouldn’t behave like that.”
Watch two other fragments from Studio Voetbal below: about a possible departure of Erik ten Hag to Manchester United (or RB Leipzig) and about two wingers from Feyenoord, Patrik Wålemark and Reiss Nelson.
