The government expects that fewer asylum seekers will come to the Netherlands this year than predicted so far. There are new forecasts and according to the ‘maximum’ scenario the number is around 68,000 asylum seekers. In April that was 76,000.

The figures are in the so-called Multi-year Production Forecast (MPP), which the NOS has seen. Outgoing State Secretary Van der Maat of Asylum Affairs will present the figures tomorrow in the Council of Ministers.

The government expects to arrive at a number between 45,000 (lowest forecast) and 60,000 (middle forecast) in 2023. That is certainly more than was predicted exactly a year ago; there were 50,650 asylum seekers, excluding Ukrainians.

The document also states that asylum reception facilities are still overcrowded. There are about 60,000 shelter places, but about 16,000 are occupied by status holders who actually have to move on to another home. “The number of asylum seekers is still high and the flow and outflow are lagging behind what is necessary,” the MPP states.
