NEW YORK — Authorities on Thursday arrested two suspects in the violent sexual assault of women inside Riverside Park in Manhattan, New York City Police officials announced Friday during a news conference.
The first suspect, 39, and related to the case that occurred early Thursday morning against a runner, was arrested hours later that same day in the afternoon, police said. He had no arrest record and was charged with attempted first degree rape, robbery, first degree sexual assault and third degree assault.
On the same Thursday night, a second suspect, 21, was arrested in relation to two cases that occurred on Tuesday, and a third possible case that occurred on June 25. He was charged with first degree rape, first degree sexual assault and first degree assault.
The first case reported by the police was on Tuesday at about 4:40 pm inside the park, in the area of West 79 Streetsaid the police at the press conference. Here the 21-year-old suspect, described as Hispanic wearing a blue shirt and a black backpack, approached the woman, grabbed her bust and uttered inappropriate words before fleeing, police said.
Later that same day during the night, at about 10:00 pm, a 38-year-old woman was in the vicinity of West 89 Street y Riverside Park. The victim was jogging in the bike lane when he was approached by the same suspect on a bicycle, police said. The subject allegedly got off the bike, pushed the victim to the ground, pulled down her pants while he was using inappropriate words, police added. The victim managed to escape and the suspect fled on his bike. The victim suffered minor bruises and scratches on her body and she was taken by paramedics to an area hospital in stable condition, the uniformed added.
This alleged attacker would be related to a possible third case that occurred in June.
The three women identified him after the arrest.
The incident involving the 39-year-old defendant occurred on Thursday in the area of Riverside Blvd y West 59th Street around 4:45 a.m. when a 33-year-old woman was walking through a Riverside park and the suspect, described as a black man wearing a red T-shirt, got off his bike and tried to have a casual conversation with her before violently throwing her to the ground, groping her and stealing her cell phone when she tried to call 9-1-1, police said. During the fight, the victim managed to remove the suspect’s chain that she was recovered by the uniformed. The cell phone was recovered after the arrest inside the suspect’s residence.
The victim recognized him after his capture.
The defendants are not related and authorities are continuing their investigation.
