The police have arrested two men (19 and 20) for fireworks violence during New Year’s Eve in Nieuw-Beijerland. They are suspected of attempted manslaughter. Police officers and firefighters were pelted with fireworks in several places in the village. Another man was arrested earlier.
According to Rijnmond A large group of young people caused a lot of nuisance in the municipality on December 30 and 31 by lighting fireworks. Fires broke out in various places. Two officers were injured after being hit by fireworks. They suffered burns and one of them suffered from tinnitus.
The mobile unit was deployed to give the fire brigade space, but firefighters were also pelted. Several care providers have filed a report.
One of the detainees was arrested on New Year’s Eve, but was sent home shortly afterwards. He was arrested again last night after new evidence was gathered against him.
Letter with warning
In December, the police and the municipality of Hoeksche Waard (which includes Nieuw-Beijerland) warned dozens of young people who had been involved in disturbances in recent years. That group received a letter. The two suspects who were arrested also received such a letter.
Furthermore, a number of young people were banned from entering the area during New Year’s Eve and Mayor Van Heiningen appealed to parents to keep an eye on their children.
“A little mischief is part of it, I don’t mind that at all. But this felt like a kind of war zone,” an anonymous resident told broadcaster Rijnmond.
