A arrested suspect escaped from the police station in the Mechelen-Willebroek zone on Tuesday afternoon. It concerned a 14-year-old boy who would have been involved in a theft in the Stationsstraat in Mechelen in the morning. During the administrative handling of the case, the teenager saw his chance to clamber through a window and flee. Despite a search, the boy managed to escape.

The police received a report on Tuesday morning of a theft in a building in the Stationsstraat in Mechelen. Two suspects were soon found nearby and arrested by the police. It concerned an adult and a young man of 14, both from Brussels.
When the younger of the two was questioned in the police station and the case was administratively processed, he managed to jump out through a window on the ground floor and was able to leave the zone commissioner’s site.
“Of course we immediately launched a search and our teams were still looking for the escaped young man. However, he could no longer be found,” Dirk Van de Sande of the local police Mechelen-Willebroek confirms the news.
Name known
The police have the name of the suspect and are now tracking the young man further. In the meantime, the arrested adult has been questioned by the police and has been made available to the public prosecutor.
“We will of course thoroughly investigate how the suspect could escape from the police station and we will also examine whether additional measures are necessary to prevent these kinds of facts from taking place,” said Van de Sande.
Exceptional
The fact that a suspect can escape from the Mechelen police station is rather exceptional. It happened again in 2017. Then a theft suspect just walked out. He could be arrested two days ago. Police will continue to do everything in their power to locate the 14-year-old on the run. (No)
