Several investigations have been opened to understand what happened on August 2, 2022 at the home of a Senegalese diplomat who was allegedly beaten up by Quebec police, according to Senegal. The country is calling for the perpetrators of the attack to be prosecuted. The Quebec police, for their part, assure that the diplomat attacked the police.

The Senegalese diplomat who would have been detained and beaten by Gatineau police last week, owed more than 45,300 Canadian dollars (34,000 euros or 22.5 million CFA francs) to its former owner. This is what we learn from a decision handed down by the Administrative Housing Tribunal (TAL) in June. This states that the diplomat owed this sum because of the condition of the furnished bungalow she was renting, which had mold on the walls and infestations of cockroaches. She was not present at the housing court hearing.

It was finally on August 2 that a bailiff went to his home to execute his order. Faced with the diplomat’s refusal to collaborate, the police were called in for reinforcement. This is followed by allegations of police violence against the diplomat and the aggressive way in which she herself allegedly acted, according to the police. The Quebec Ministry of Public Security has asked the Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI), the police force, to investigate these allegations. For its part, the Ministry of Global Affairs Canada ensures that it is working with its Senegalese counterpart to shed light on this story.
