Police in the city of Milan in northern Italy arrested five activists from the ‘Last Generation’ group on Wednesday who attacked the La Scala Theater with paint, carrying a banner with environmental slogans.
Milan police said the five detainees threw blue paint on the traditional theater hours before the opening of the 2022-2023 season and held up a banner reading “Last generation – no gas, no coal”.
According to a police statement, the possibility of an environmental attack, as has occurred in recent months in other places in the culture, “was a possible risk” before the start of the season.
According to the newspaper Repubblica, the theater staff “immediately started” the cleaning work of La Scala, which this year will open its season with the Russian opera Boris Godunov, with the participation of the president Sergio Mattarella, the prime minister Giorgia Meloni and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
