In a preliminary investigation led by the central and contact point Cybercrime NRW, Cologne Public Prosecutor’s Office, special forces from the Cologne police arrested a man from Wermelskirchen on Friday afternoon (December 3) on the basis of an arrest warrant from the Cologne District Court, searched his apartment and seized a large number of electronic data carriers. The accused is strongly suspected of having committed serious sexual abuse of a child. He is also accused of having obtained corresponding images. The allegations extend over a period from 2017 to 2019 and result from evaluated chats in which the accused is said to have participated. The accused who confessed is now in a correctional facility. The investigations – in particular the evaluation of the extensively secured data carriers – are ongoing and will take a considerable amount of time. With a view to the ongoing investigations and to protect the personal rights of those involved in the proceedings, no further information can be given. (mw / de)
