arrested for cybercrime, a Frenchman faces 116 years in prison in the USA

As part of an international investigation between Morocco and the FBI, a 21-year-old Frenchman was arrested and imprisoned in Morocco. He is wanted by the United States for his alleged involvement in a cybercrime case against companies, some of which are American.

Sébastien Raoult, was arrested on May 31 at Rabat-Salé airport while he was the subject of a red noticeinternational alert message – issued by Interpol, according to information from The Obs. According to Moroccan media, citing a police source, the arrest of the young French hacker was “the result of cooperation between the Moroccan General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and the FBI”.

His lawyer, Me Phillipe Ohayon, opposes the extradition request made by the United States. “He only stayed in France and Morocco. If there is piracy, it is from France. The natural judge is the French judge“, he argues. To support his request, he sent letters to the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, to the French Minister of Justice, Éric Dupont-Moretti as well as to the parquet floor of Épinal in the Vosges, where his client is domiciled.

“Prolific cybercriminals”

The former student of Epitech, a French computer school, is imprisoned since June 2 in a prison near the capital of Morocco, Flap. According The Obsthe FBI suspects the Vosges of being part of a group of hackers, the “Shiny Hunters“, accused of being “prolific cybercriminals”.

In the event of extradition to the United States, Sébastien Raoult risks 116 years in prison. The charges against him by the American courts are as follows: “Conspiracies to commit electronic fraud and abuse”, “electronic fraud” and “serious identity theft”, still according to The Obs. One of the companies that the hacker group allegedly attacked is the American company Microsoft.
