Fried Sam Bankman was extradited to the United States from the Bahamas, to be held responsible for allegations of misappropriation of investor funds in the cryptocurrency company he founded, FTP extension. Apparently, one of the whistleblowers who leaked FTX’s various errors was a woman who was strongly suspected of being his ex-girlfriend.
Caroline Ellison is the former CEO of Alameda Research, a company that Bankman also co-founded and receives a lot of money from. Caroline is threatened with 110 years in prison before agreeing to work with the US federal government.
quoted detikINET according to the New York Post, the 28-year-old woman pleaded guilty to fraud charges. “The maximum total prison sentence is 110 years in prison,” state documents filed by US prosecutors for the Southern District of New York.
“I’m really sorry for what I did,” Caroline Ellison told law enforcement. “I know it’s wrong.”
Ellison, whose parents taught at MIT, was not permitted to travel outside the United States and was required to turn over his travel documents to law enforcement.
In addition to Caroline, FTX co-founder Gary Wang has also agreed to fully cooperate with the FBI and in return they will likely get a much less severe sentence. However, it is unclear how much relief they will be given.
Meanwhile, Bankman himself faces eight charges carrying a maximum sentence of 115 years in prison. He is currently out on $250 million bail to be placed under house arrest at his parents’ home in Palo Alto, California, near Stanford University, where they are both law professors. Bankman awaits prosecution for his crimes.
