22 tonnes of valuable cheddar worth around €360,000 were stolen from a London cheesemonger in a high-profile theft. The motive continues to pose a mystery. But now there is progress in the investigation into the “Great Cheese Robbery”.
A 63-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud and receiving stolen property, the Metropolitan Police in the British capital said. He was questioned at a police station in south London and then released on conditions until further investigations were completed.
A few days ago, cheese wholesaler Neal’s Yard Dairy said thieves had posed as wholesalers for a French grocer. The company supplied more than 950 wheels of Hafod Welsh Organic Cheddar, Westcombe Cheddar and Pitchfork Cheddar before the fraud was discovered.
250 grams costs 7 pounds
According to the company, the award-winning cheeses are among the most sought-after in the UK. 250 grams of Westcombe from producer Tom Calver in southwest England costs £7.
According to British media, industry experts speculate that the cheddar could have been brought illegally to the Middle East or Russia. TV celebrity chef Jamie Oliver called on cheesemongers worldwide to be vigilant.
