- The US police took action against participants in illegal street races near New York.
- Hundreds of sports cars took part in the races.
- The event reminded the local district administrator of the film series “The Fast and The Furious”.
After illegal street races with hundreds of sophisticated sports cars east of New York, the police arrested twelve men. The competitions in the Suffolk district on Long Island reminded of the film series “The Fast and The Furious”said District Administrator Steven Bellone at a press conference on Saturday. “Illegal races belong in Hollywood”said Bellone, “not on the Suffolk public streets.”
According to the local police chief Geraldine Hart, the investigators came to the drivers after one “months of undercover operation” on track. The races were mostly organized spontaneously via social media. According to Hart, around 200 souped-up cars have been racing since October in a total of nine competitions in various industrial areas. The police have now confiscated ten “high-end sports cars”.
In the illegal races, many cars were traveling at more than 160 kilometers per hour, according to Hart. The drivers took advantage of that on the roads of Long Island currently less traffic due to the corona restrictions rule than usual. Still, Hart described the races as “extremely ruthless”. After all, in the industrial areas, she said, many people still drive to work every day.
