A clip of the two women dancing near Tajrish Square, a popular gathering place for young people in the Iranian capital, went viral on social media.

– The public prosecutor in Tehran ordered the arrest of two women who broke social norms by dancing at Tajrish, reports the state news agency Tasnim on Saturday.

The women were dressed as Hadji Farouz, a red-clad folklore figure who dances and sings to announce Nowruz, the Persian New Year that begins on March 20.

The Islamic law practiced in Iran prohibits various forms of dancing and women being alone in public.

In recent months, many videos of women dancing in public places have gone viral in Iran, after a mass protest movement shook the country in late 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September of that year.

Amini was a 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman who was arrested by the morality police in Tehran, because she did not respect the strict dress code that applies in the Islamic Republic.
