Arrest of Russian Citizen Working as Israeli Spy in Lebanon

The arrested Russian citizen announced that he had been recruited by Israeli intelligence not long ago, and that he had received instructions to go to Lebanon to investigate Hezbollah facilities, while the occupation media indicated that the security establishment remained silent on this issue.

The Lebanese General Security stopped an Israeli spy cell consisting of a Russian citizen and his wife, while they were trying to leave Lebanon through Beirut Airport.

The news of the arrest of the spy network in Lebanon resonated with the Israeli media, without the occupation security establishment commenting on it or any official entity of the occupation issuing a clarification in this regard.

Or Heller, the military commentator on the Israeli Channel 13, said, “In the security establishment, they do not comment this evening on reports from Lebanon.”

Heller added, “We are talking about a Russian couple, a man and his wife, who were arrested by the Lebanese intelligence and Hezbollah elements while they were trying to travel from the airport in Beirut and board the plane.”

And he continued, “According to reports, the man admitted during his interrogation in Lebanon that he had recently worked for the Israeli intelligence, and asked him to go to Beirut and track down Hezbollah elements, specifically the suburb square.”

The Channel 13 commentator stated that “in the past, many spy networks that were attributed to Israeli intelligence have fallen in recent years, but the security establishment and the Israeli army do not comment on these reports published in Lebanon, neither denying nor confirming.”

Israeli newspapers also reported the news on their websites, and Haaretz reported the news according to Lebanese sources, without adding any details.

As for the Maariv newspaper, it commented that “Israel does not need Russians or other foreigners for espionage.”

And the Lebanese General Security announced, on Friday, that it had arrested an Israeli spy cell consisting of a Russian citizen and his wife, while they were trying to leave Lebanon through Beirut Airport, on charges of spying for “Israel”.

The Lebanese newspaper, Al-Akhbar, revealed, citing sources, that the arrest “came as a result of cooperation between Hezbollah and the Lebanese General Security, as the party suspected the arrested person who had visited Lebanon during the past days of Ashura, and was wandering around the neighborhoods of the southern suburbs, and upon suspicion of him, he was pursued, and then General Security traced his contacts and place of residence in a hotel, and when he tried to leave Lebanon, he was arrested.

According to the newspaper, the arrested Russian citizen admitted that “he was recruited by Israeli intelligence not long ago, and that he had received instructions to go to Lebanon, and he was provided with maps of places, gatherings, and facilities belonging to Hezbollah, and he was asked to go to those addresses, inspect them, and photograph them if possible.” .

The Russian spy also admitted that he “visited the suburb more than once” and that he was working to “collect data to match it with previous information available to his operators.”

During the interrogation with his wife, she admitted knowing her husband’s work and helping him in his duties.

The newspaper reported that “the Lebanese authorities informed the Russian embassy in Beirut of the matter, to inform it of the nature of the arrest, before the detainee was referred with the investigation records to the military judiciary for prosecution.”

In turn, the Russian diplomatic mission told “Novosti” agency, “The embassy in Lebanon is” aware of the current situation regarding the detention of Russian citizens in Lebanon, and is taking the necessary steps to clarify the detailed circumstances from the Lebanese side.

The embassy added that it “is taking measures, in accordance with international and domestic legislation, for consular access to detained Russian citizens.”

The Acting Director General of Lebanese Public Security, Major General Elias Al-Bisari, revealed a day ago the arrest of a spying network for “Israel” at Beirut airport, stressing that it “posed a threat to Lebanon.”
