Arrest Made in Warehouse Homicide: NYPD Still Seeking Second Suspect

Fili Núñez Rodríguez was arrested as a suspect in the shooting that left a man dead who was chased by two subjects to a warehouse in The Bronx (NYC).

NYPD Still Searching for Second Suspect in Cleveland Smith Homicide happened on October 1. The 35-year-old victim was standing on E. 175th St. near Grand Concourse when two men harassed him around 5:10 p.m. The attack was captured on dramatic video. Caution is recommended when observing it.

The duo chased the victim to a nearby warehouse and opened fire., shooting him in the torso. Paramedics took Smith to St. Barnabas Hospital, but were unable to save him. The gunmen fled on a moped, according to the NYPD.

The motive for the crime, which occurred near the victim’s residence, is unclear.. Friends described Smith, who was 5 feet 2 inches tall, as “the smallest person with the biggest heart.”

“He kept the whole block together,” he told Daily News a friend who only wanted to be identified as Debbie. “We’re trying to figure out what happened like everyone else.”

On November 1, police located and arrested Rodríguez, who was charged with murder, weapons possession and reckless endangerment. He was ordered held without bail during a brief arraignment the next day, according to court records.

All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Yesterday police released surveillance footage of the second alleged accomplice who they say also chased Smith into the warehouse. They ask for the public’s help to identify and locate him.

“This was a coup, a selective assassination and, “Like many victims, Smith ran towards one of our warehouses trying to save his life.”Radahmés Rodríguez, president of United Bodegas of America (UBA), said last month about this case.

“The UBA has long asked municipal and state governments to help create ‘Bodegas Safe Haven’, a program that can protect victims like Junior Guzmán, who also entered a warehouse in search of refuge.”

Rodríguez was referring to the death in 2018 of Lesandro “Junior” Guzmán Feliz, a fifteen-year-old who ran into another warehouse in the Bronx to escape a gang of gang members, but they dragged him out onto the street and hacked him to death, when they apparently mistook him for a rival.

In New York, the interior and surroundings of warehouses are frequently crime scenes, both robberies and homicides. NYPD has been alerting since last year for a increasing insecurity in businesses, including violent attacks involving employees and owners.

Many owners have chosen to reduce hours and lock up merchandise. given the rise in robberies in stores, pharmacies and warehouses.

Anyone with information about the second suspect who remains at large should call at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) and in Spanish 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Also through the page crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or by text message to 274637 (CRIMES), followed by TIP577. All communications are strictly confidential.
