British police have arrested a second suspect for felling one of Britain’s most famous trees: the Sycamore Gap Tree in Northumberland.

On Thursday, hikers discovered that the two-hundred-year-old maple tree had been cut down. Shortly afterwards, a 16-year-old boy was arrested for vandalism. He has been released provisionally.

The tree became famous because it featured in a key scene in Kevin Costner’s 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Since then, the maple has also been known as the ‘Robin Hood Tree’ and has become one of Britain’s most photographed trees. .

The 60-year-old man now in custody was arrested last night. Northumberland Police say this second arrest shows how seriously the case is being taken.

Despite the arrests, much is still unclear about the motive for the destruction. “While another arrest has been made, this investigation is still in its early stages and we would therefore continue to ask the public to come forward with any information that could help solve the case.

The BBC reports that forensic research has now been carried out on the tree. “In my 31 years of investigating traces, I have never investigated a tree,” said one of the police officers.
