Arrest Made in New York Daycare with ‘Ghost Weapons’ and 3D Printer

Two weeks after a stash of fentanyl was discovered in a daycare center in New York where a one-year-old child died, this Wednesday the city authorities intervened in an apartment licensed to operate as a child care center where they found ‘ghost weapons’ and a 3D printer to manufacture them.

While executing a search warrant in East Harlem, police found two weapons, a nearly completed assault pistol, the printer and other tools.

So-called ‘ghost guns’ can be assembled in homes and lack serial numbers, therefore cannot be traced.

Police arrested a man identified as Karon J. Coley, 18, who lives at the apartment, and was charged with illegal possession of firearms, manufacturing an assault weapon and reckless endangerment, according to the district attorney’s office. Manhattan district, Alvin Bragg. Two minors were also arrested.

Investigators also found an “abused and neglected” dog at the child care center, said Rebecca Weiner, deputy commissioner of the NYPD’s Office of Intelligence and Counterterrorism.

The daycare had its license in order

The site, which operates under the name Alay’s Day Care, opened in February 2021 with a license valid until February 2025, according to state inspection records, cited in a report by The New York Times. It was authorized to care for a maximum of 12 children, ages 6 weeks to 12 years, in addition to four other school-age children.

The detainee’s mother, April Coley, had passed a background check “within the last year.”

New York Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday that his administration will review inspection procedures in light of these alarming incidents.

“This is a heartbreaking situation where you think you’re leaving your child in a safe place, only to find out it was a dangerous environment where someone was making a gun,” Adams said.

It is the second time this month that a dangerous incident has occurred at a child care center in New York.
