The arrested shooter
The Surinamese police confirmed on Sunday that the gunman who shot dead the 38-year-old moped rider of Brazilian origin last Saturday on the corner of Gijsbertusstraat and Tourtonnelaan has been arrested. It concerns the 21-year-old EV (photo) reports the Suriname Police Force.
The preliminary investigation by the police has shown that the moped rider RJ came from the direction of the Gijsbertusstraat and drove towards the Tourtonnelaan. At the aforementioned intersection, the moped rider failed to give way to the van that was driving on the Tourtonnelaan, resulting in the collision.
When the driver of the van asked for the moped rider’s documents, he could not show them and it was difficult to communicate because of the Portuguese language. MK and EV approaching in a gray painted passenger car stopped and offered help in communicating. Another Brazilian man who was on the scene also tried to communicate with the moped rider.
The moped rider decided to call a friend who informed him that he would pay for the material damage to the van. The friend lived not far from the location, so the injured party visited the home of the moped rider’s friend together with the other Brazilian man.
According to eyewitnesses, the moped rider suddenly ran onto Blauwdasstraat and shortly afterwards returned armed with a shotgun and aimed the weapon at the occupants of the van involved in the collision. One of the co-occupiers, who is a penitentiary officer, fired two warning shots into the air upon seeing this.
On that occasion, the co-occupant EV of the grey-painted vehicle shot several times at the moped rider from a distance, with fatal consequences for him. After the deed, EV and MK left the spot in the gray painted vehicle. After detailed information by members of the Capital Offenses department and the Central Regional Assistance Team (RBTM), the two were located and arrested at two separate addresses.
The weapon that the shooter was found to have illegally in his possession has been found and has been seized by the police. The service firearm of the penitentiary officer has also been seized by the police pending the investigation.
After coordination with the Public Prosecution Service, both EV and MK have been insured by the police.
