NEW YORK — A 21-year-old man was arrested after allegedly killing another man and injuring four others after he opened fire outside an illegal end-of-summer party at a Long Island event space, police said.
Kyle Matthews was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a weapon in the Aug. 21 shooting in Valley Stream. Witnesses said that around 8:30 pm shots were fired in a space called Dopies. A semi-automatic handgun was used to fire eight rounds into a crowd, hitting several people, Nassau County police said after the shooting.
A 20-year-old Brooklyn man, identified as Deandre Carter, was killed and four others under the age of 18, including a 12-year-old boy and three 17-year-olds, were injured. Nassau County Police Detective. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said Matthews approached the five people in front of the group and opened fire with two pistols.
Police said Matthews is a known member of the Bloods who shot up the Ocean Avenue party because it was being hosted by people known to Crips gang members. The 12-year-old boy was struck in the shoulder, police said, and two others were admitted to Queens Hospital with leg and knee injuries respectively.
People were seen running around the block just after gunshots erupted. Those who live in the area have described it as very unusual for a shooting or something similar to take place in the residential neighborhood.
There is now a memorial outside the event space. Bullet holes can still be seen in the windows from shots allegedly fired by Matthews and at least one other person.
Matthews defiantly denied any involvement in the shooting, telling reporters: “I didn’t do sh*t!”
Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder said Matthews, of Far Rockaway and Uniondale, was previously arrested in December 2021 for having a loaded gun. He was sentenced to three years probation and, a year later, he was again arrested for gun possession, but released on bail.
On Thursday, Matthews was remanded in custody and sent back to jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for the end of September.
“This individual should have been in jail, this senseless murder would not have happened and the other three victims were shot and wounded,” Ryder said.
