Arrest in investigation into illegal trade in puppies and kittens

Adult dogs and cats, puppies and kittens were seized during raids on two buildings in Schagen and Medemblik. A 37-year-old man from Schagen has been arrested for illegal animal trafficking, money laundering and forgery.

The police, together with the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and the National Environmental Team, are investigating illegal trade in puppies and kittens. In that investigation, the suspect came forward, after which it was decided to search two buildings today.

Nine adult French bulldogs and two puppies were found in the premises. In addition, the police found eight adult purebred cats and eighteen kittens. A large amount of money and administrative data were also found and seized in the buildings.

More arrests not excluded

Because the animals were kept in unfriendly conditions, they were checked by a veterinarian, writes NH News. The dogs and cats are being taken care of at a temporary location where they do receive good care, the police said.

The investigation into the illegal trade in dogs and cats is still ongoing. The animal police, together with the NVWA and the detectives of the Environmental Team, also suspect that several arrests will follow.
