Correspondent Aletta André:
Tensions between Hindus and Muslims have been mounting since Prime Minister Modi’s Hindu nationalist government came to power in 2014. Civilian militias that oppose cow slaughter, intermarriage and conversions regularly use violence without being punished.
A new citizenship law from 2019, which makes it easier for refugees from neighboring countries to become citizens unless they are Muslims, sparked large-scale protests. In Delhi, at the beginning of 2020, the fights between Hindus and Muslims resulted in dozens of deaths. Thousands of people, mostly Muslims, were left homeless.
More and more states are adopting anti-conversion laws, creating tensions. Christians are also regularly the victims of this.”
