Arrest and Sentencing of Necklace Thieves in Pontoise: Latest Updates and Details

They were caught stealing a necklace. Two men were sentenced to 30 months and 20 months in prison by the court in Pontoise (Val-d’Oise) last week. They were presented for immediate appearance after being arrested a few days earlier by the anti-crime brigade (BAC) of the Sarcelles police station.

The police received several complaints from elderly people who indicated that their necklaces had been stolen from the parking lot of the Carrefour shopping center in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt. These facts dated back to August 1 and 2. During a patrol on August 4, a team from the Sarcelles BAC noticed two men behaving suspiciously.

They see them making many round trips to the parking lot, without a specific destination. For more than an hour, the police observe them. They see them looking into parked vehicles. They seem to be interested in older people.

Caught in flagrante delicto

This is where the officers see one of the two men acting as a lookout as the other approaches an elderly woman. The suspect tears off the old lady’s necklace and runs away towards his accomplice. The two criminals were arrested without difficulty. The man who had just committed the theft tried to get rid of the necklace by throwing it in the sight of the police. The object was found nearby in a bush.

The two suspects were brought back to the police station and taken into custody. Sarcelles urban security investigators found a gold necklace on one of them that could match one of the jewels stolen on August 1, at the same place, to the detriment of another elderly lady.

During the first hearings, the one caught in the act of tearing off a necklace admitted the facts. He said he wanted to resell it, in order to buy clothes. His accomplice stubbornly denied. He assured that the necklace found on his person, during his search, belonged to him. The latter ended up recognizing the thefts, during subsequent hearings. A complainant recognized the necklace he wore around his neck as his, identifying at the same time his attacker. He explained that he stole because he needed money to live. The found jewels were returned to their owners.
