Árpád Sterbik, the handball legend of Veszprém, had a heart attack

On Tuesday, Árpád Sterbik, the goalkeeper coach of the Telekom Veszprém men’s handball team, went to the hospital because he felt bad, and the doctors diagnosed him with a heart attack.

According to the club’s social media page, thanks to the quick medical intervention, he is already feeling better and may be able to leave the intensive care unit on Thursday.



The 44-year-old athlete born in Zenta played for Veszprém from 2001 to 2004, then spent many years in Spain, playing for Ciudad Real, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona. Between 2014-18, he played in Vardar in North Macedonia, where he won his fourth Champions League title after 2006, 2008 and 2009.

He returned to Veszprém in 2018. He retired in 2020, since then he has been working as the goalkeeper coach of the Hungarian team.

He played in the Yugoslav and Spanish national teams, with the former he won two World Cup bronze medals, and with the latter he won the World (2013) and European Championship (2018) titles.

In 2005, he was chosen as the best handball player in the world.
