the top 30 is not far off my list, so much the better. I thought of Graulhet yes, Revallier, all that, beforehand. An era … These clubs are playing in federal 2 now.

Ah, Graulhet, one of the two black beasts of the great Béziers …

And justly…

We had a discussion about what “the great Béziers” was not long ago. I took the time to give you a little statistical information

Overall assessment of AS Béziers between the seasons 1969-1970 and 1984-1985, i.e. 16 seasons.

16 qualifiers in the final phase.
10 French championship titles
A lost final (1976, against Agen)
Elimination in the semi-finals (1973 against Dax)
Elimination in the quarter-finals (1985 against Toulouse)
Three eliminations in the round of 16 (1970 against Brive, 1979 against Bagnères, 1982 against Lourdes in a return match).

Season when ASB is undefeated:
1970-1971, 17 wins and 2 draws (in Pau and Dijon).
1971-1972, 18 wins and 1 draw (at Montauban).
1974-1975, 19 victories.
1977-1978, 19 victories.

Statistical review:
317 matches played, for 261 wins, 10 draws, 46 losses. Average match score: 26 to 8.
Defense :
32 matches without collecting points, plus 59 matches without conceding a single try or penalty or drop-goal.

Only six matches (out of 317) ended without Béziers scoring over this period, against Bègles (1970), Bagnères (1973), Mazamet (1981), Pau (1984) and Toulouse twice (1985 x2). But “fanny” were not rare at the time.

Record of the biggest victory in the championship, 100 to zero against Montchanin on December 16, 1979, (including eleven tries for Fabre)…

And again, I will not go into details … It should also be noted that, like any monster, the ASB also had its pet peeves: La Voulte, which snatches three wins and a draw and the capture of Sauclières, and in a lesser degree Pau, Aurillac, Montauban, Toulon, Bayonne, Bagnères, Graulhet, La Rochelle, and Oloron, who will have succeeded in bringing down the colossus several times.

When can we date the fall of ASB? I will point out two significant reverses, signed Toulouse. It is the red and black that put an end to the reign of the myth, by two symbolic acts: the 21-0 inflicted in the quarter-finals of the 1884-1985 season, a first for the ASB in years that not to score in the minus three points in a playoff game. And in 1986, in the pool stage, the Stadium exploded the ASB 43 to 12, as for a transfer of power.

The ASB, although declining, is still in the running during the quarters in 86 (beaten by Agen) and 1987 (released by Toulon), but the domination is no longer the same, the old Sauclières is no longer impregnable. Narbonne and Toulouse came in 1986, Graulhet in 1987 (as well as two draws for Montferrand and Grenoble), Toulon and Tarbes in 1988. These two setbacks cost the Hérault residents the qualification, a first since the 1950-1951 season. They will never see the Brennus or the Parc des Princes again. Toulouse, Stade Français, then the BO will don the costume of the master, but without displaying the same maddening statistics or the same outrageous domination.

Of course, times have changed, and so has the game, but no club has reached a comparable level of crushing of the competition over such a long period.

And symbolically, Pierre Lacans, the captain of Béziers, died in a road accident at the start of the 85-86 season, when it really began to be over.

Thank you Mev for this panorama which will seem exotic to the youngest of us …
This Béziers was very very very strong anyway, it makes you dream of the stats that you release.

We only realize with hindsight that this fifteen-year domination of a sport is clearly exceptional. Maybe the PSG cheated on petrodollars could do it … I would have to look at the ASVEL case in basketball, where the young ladies of Clermont of the orange ball, they achieved similar things,

There are few images left of what a Béziers group game was like, to realize their phenomenal physical embrace imposed on others.

A bit like the NBA, there was a real difference between the regular season and the finals, the game is not the same because the physical and defensive intensity was not at all the same.

But Béziers “ran in” for fourteen or eighteen matches its crushing system, its automatisms, playing in unbridled mode. Sure of their strength, they allowed themselves fantasies.

In the final phase, the gigantic Biterrois crusher that constituted the pack no longer “spit out” a ball at its rear until it was certain that it had crushed everything patiently and meticulously.

This frivolity will be blamed on them, moreover, because the spectacular game of the ASB that pulverized its visitors to Sauclieres disintegrated in the spring under the demand of the results. The artists who became embalmers-anesthetists, they did not inspire any sympathy.

But it is this image that remains to us, the final stages being filmed and broadcast live on TV. Béziers was a fantastic machine to play, however, but their hatred of risk coupled with their addiction to victory drove them into dire restrictions.

Note that, according to the images and the press of the time, they were never caught in their own trap in the final phase, except against Lourdes in the 1/8 AR. The Bayonnais, Dacquois or Agenais rear had found solutions to bypass the monster.

But it took a hell of a lot of talent and some good circumstances to get through.

I swear to you that I remember as if it was yesterday to discover incredulously the result in La Montagne while eating the croissants from my grandmother’s baker. And she: This is what happens when you play in black.

@Mev

I spent my 4 years of college and my 3 years of high school in Béziers. My school housed the Sports Studies Rugby section, and among the boarders, there were the Cambérabéro brothers (Didier and Gilles). In final year, my sports teacher was called Raoul Barrière. In 1981, Mitterrand was elected on May 10, Béziers won the title on May 25, and the bac philosophy test was June 3. I think I still had a headache.

We came across Vacquerin on the Allées, Estève in a box, Palmié in front of his insurance firm, Escande, Cantoni, Fabre in town too.

And the Monday morning sports session, in final, invariably began with the 20 laps of the field, while the good Raoul commented on the matches of the day before with the gardener. That year, in sports, we did not touch a soccer ball once.

To complete Mev’s point a little, the group stages gave rise to matches which could be frankly unbalanced; from then on, the forwards were allowed to let the rear have fun too.

Barrière’s philosophy was nevertheless the emphasis on the phases of conquest and domination of the pack.

The ASVEL is a little different: no period of such absolute domination (only once three consecutive titles between 55 and 57 and three others retention of the title from one year to the next only) but thirty years to win on average one in two titles.
(on the other hand, if you are looking for a team that wins everything for about fifteen years, there is a series in progress which even extends a little to Europe).

Well seen: 12 titles in a row and a final one for the road a little later.
Nevertheless, compared to Béziers, the CUC had a closer relationship with the national team, from its creation (a regional team with 3 internationals, it is unusual), then by becoming the obligatory passage to be international. in the 70s.
